PRAYER - REFLECTIONS AND MEDITATIONS

On this page you will find links to some reflections, meditations and similar resources that can be downloaded in '.pdf' format. Most of them were written at, or inspired by, retreats or quiet days I have attended. They record and recall something of what came out of those occasions. I have often found them helpful to re-read during or before a time of prayer. I offer them in the hope that you will also find them similarly helpful.

Many of them include a photogaph which may serve as a focus. In some cases the photograph is directly relevant to the text.

Let God do it all attempts to lead us into what goes by names such as 'silent prayer', 'still prayer' and 'Christian meditation', in which we remain still and silent, resting in God's love and allowing his Spirit to pray in us with 'sighs too deep for words' (Romans 8:26). I find it often helps to read Let God do it all before a time of silent prayer. The photograph is of Glendurgan garden in Cornwall (National Trust), created by its original (Quaker) owner as 'a small peace (sic) of heaven'.

Come to Me takes some of its inspiration from the church building in the photograph (St James, Riddlesdown in Purley, Surrey, where I was enjoying a quiet day) and goes on to think about Jesus' invitation to 'Come to Me' (Matthew 11:28). It picks up the idea of resting in God's love, but this is not just an invitation to passive rest but the start if a glorious relationship and an inspiration for the Christian life.

Prayer - A Meditation downloads a .pdf version of the meditation that appears on another page of this website (see links on the left and at the foot of the page). It aims to open up the idea of prayer beyond a list of requests or a cry of help. The photograph is of the interior of St Mylor church, Mylor, near Falmouth in Cornwall
